Private or NHS?
'I had previously been informed that by having a hernia operation, I may be out of action for a few weeks, not being able to drive or work', he explains. 'As an extremely busy Managing Director with a hectic social life, I just didn't have a few weeks to spare.' And this was not the only problem. 'I also wanted the procedure performed under a local anaesthetic, rather than a general', he adds.
After talking to Mr C, a private health professional carried out research, and found a number of options. One of these was a hospital in London, which was not only able to perform the procedure under a local anaesthetic, but the recovery period was also likely to be shorter than originally expected. This particular hospital immediately appealed to Mr C, and he decided to take this option. So why, when he lives in Somerset, did he want to go to London for the operation? 'Well, for a start, it was less expensive', he says. 'I could have a local anaesthetic, and after seeing their brochure, I was very impressed. The forecasted outcome was also better, with a recurrent hernia less likely.
Mr C also describes what happened when he arrived at the hospital. 'I had a brief consultation with the specialist mid-afternoon, and within two hours I had had the surgery. The actual procedure only took about forty minutes. I felt as if I could have gone home straight away. I didn't feel any discomfort at all'. Mr C felt so well, in fact, that although he had the operation on a Friday afternoon, he was back to work on the Monday. 'There's no doubt that if the operation had taken place on, say a Monday, I would have returned to work the very next day!"
So, in view of his speedy recovery, Mr C's normal work routine was unaffected. But that's not all. He also made a financial saving. Is this typical of the private sector or just a one of story. Join us on Twitter to discuss
Referrals: Choose & BookChoose & Book is a national computer–based scheme offering patients a choice of hospital, time and date for their outpatient appointments. In discussion with their patient, GPs can identify several clinically appropriate hospitals for the patient to choose from and the patient can then book their appointment through a local NHS booking service or by booking the appointment themselves online.
