28th December - Mayor of Poole Dines on Ash
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her husband and Consort Mr David Butt opened the new ‘Ash' restaurant in Ashley Road in Parkstone.
Arriving at the crowded restaurant, the Mayor was greeted by the joint owners Karl Ingham and Darren Martin (Chef Extraordinaire) and made an ‘edgy' speech of welcome before cutting a bright red ribbon to formally open the new restaurant. While being treated to superb champagne and delicious canapés, the Mayor made a point of meeting all the invited guests and discussed cabbages and kings especially Savoys and King Edwards!!
Darren Martin, who at 28 is the Head Chef, has previously worked at Pebble Beach, Splinters and Westbeach, and has spent time researching food and recipes while working across Europe and North Africa. As a result, the new restaurant will offer influences from Morocco, Spain, France and Italy as well as the ‘volcanic stone' method of cooking offered by the Volcano Stone restaurant which previously occupied the same premises. For contact information about Ash restaurant, see www.ashcatering.co.uk/.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "As Mayor I had a choice of scissors to use from the Mayoral Regalia, and I picked those previously used to open the Seldown Bridge, because I am certain this new restaurant will be a high flyer. I don't do food but the Dom Perignon was scrummy and I was delighted to assist mine hosts in ensuring there was no wastage in the bubbly department!! Well it is Christmas and just once in a while one's little foibles have to be allowed for, even of you are the Mayor!! I promise to make a good New Year's resolution that I can keep to based on truth, integrity and honesty, ergo, ‘I promise to ensure that at all times I will drink in Moderation, the Dog and Duck, the Tumblers Half Crown and the Flute and Fairy!!!"

25th December - Mayor of Poole Greets Special Guests
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her husband and Consort Mr David Butt welcomed sixty five guests and volunteers who had a fantastic time together on Christmas day at the Salvation Army in New Orchard, Old Poole. Volunteer drivers brought in the guests, who would otherwise have spent the day on their own. Entertainment by electric organist Roy Brook put everyone in a jolly mood before the much-appreciated visit of the Mayor of Poole, Councillor Mrs Judy Butt and Mayor's Consort, Mr David Butt; their three children, Daniel, Charlie and Georgie, were also invited to attend to meet the very special guests. The Mayor gave a welcoming speech sharing her ‘Bob Cratchett Turkey story' to all present.
The story in a nutshell being, (but the Mayor dragged it out much further for theatrical effect) that she had sent her husband out a tad late to buy the Christmas Turkey on Christmas Eve, and triumphant he had returned with a turkey that had obviously been hiding behind an ice cube in the freezer, that was so small that earlier on in the day Bob Cratchett of Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol' fame and his family had popped in but turned the turkey down as even too small for his family!!!! The Mayor and her family greeted all the guests and volunteers, spending time chatting with them individually over an hour or so.
The Mayor then led the guests in a verse of ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas' which was much enjoyed by everyone. The Mayor had specifically requested that ‘grace' would be said with her and her family present to ensure a true sense of sharing and family on such a special day, and Major Philip Mountain was very happy to agree to the Mayor's request and gave a touching and relevant ‘grace' for the festive season. The Mayor's party then reluctantly took their leave to allow the guests to enjoy a full Christmas luncheon, followed by party games and carol singing. For more information about the Salvation Army in Poole, see www.poolesa.org/index.html.
The Mayor Cllr Mrs Judy Butt said "David, the children and I were delighted to be asked to share our own Christmas with what must have been one of the largest ‘family' gatherings in Poole on Christmas Day. The sense of true companionship and genuine affection was tangible and embodied the true Christian meaning of the birth of our Lord Jesus."

23rd December - Mayor of Poole Shakes it in the High Street
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her husband and Consort Mr David Butt and family, fellow Councillors and supporters, took part in the annual fancy dress Christmas bucket shake in Poole High Street, organised year in year out by past Mayor Cllr Ray Smith, the fancy dress being the brainchild of the present Mayor, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt many years ago when she was first asked to help out at the normal Christmas Bucket shake. The day's bucket shaking was backed by seasonal cheerful music and carols.
Despite the last minute pressures to be ready for the festivities, helpers turned out in large numbers, most wearing seasonal fancy dress so that Poole High Street had an exceptional turnout of Santa Claus's, snowmen, elves, Snow Princesses and indeterminate costumes, the star of the show being the Mayor in her stunning Madame Santa outfit. In very cold but dry weather, shoppers were in a generous giving mood just before Christmas and contributed a magnificent £1075 towards the Mayor's charities; Poole Citizen's Advice Bureau, Poole Forum and Help and Care. For full information about the Mayor's charities, see www.boroughofpoole.com/mayor.
The favourite comment of the day went to a shopper who approached a Santa and asked the way to Iceland, to be told to head north and bear left past Scotland! At 11 am, most of the collectors downed buckets and formed up into a choir for carol singing, led by Choir Mistress Cllr Joyce Lavender the medley included a superb solo of ‘In the Bleak Midwinter' by the Mayor, brilliantly backed by the newly formed impromptu choir!
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "It was a great day with a fab turnout of helpers and shoppers. As usual I wore my Madame Christmas outfit and was rewarded on several occasion by the ‘posting' of paper money in my garters, brave men really to venture that far but all in a super cause and much laughter was had by all present. My personal thanks to Cllr Smith who works so hard to ensure that every bucket shake is a tremendous success, guaranteeing that the money is counted and safely locked away long after we had all gone home!"

The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, visited the breakfast club at Civic Club in Poole's Civic Centre.
Making a particularly early start, the Mayor dropped in on Council staff who were having breakfast in the Civic Club before starting the day's work. Talking to both diners and the kitchen and waiting staff, the Mayor wished them season's greetings.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "What a great idea and a super way to wind down at work to prepare for the Christmas Season. The Civic Club looked great thanks to the hard work of the staff. We rely on them to be there for us week in week out, providing delicious food and drink at amazing prices, my personal thanks to them for their continuing commitment and excellent service."

21st December - Mayor of Poole Talks about Charities
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her husband and Consort Mr David Butt and local Member of Parliament Mr Robert Syms, attended a carol concert at St John's Church in Branksome.
Led by incumbent Rev Graham Loughlin, the service comprised many uplifting community carols, interspersed with a song by local children, a dance routine by a group of teenagers, and singing by the Poole Male Voice Choir, all backed by a Salvation Army band. During the evening, the Mayor was invited to talk to the congregation about her charity work, which she embellished with topical Christmas anecdotes. This was followed by tea and mince pies in the church hall, during which the Mayor took the opportunity to meet and chat with all of the local parishioners who had stayed.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "I have been brushing up on my seasonal jokes as I am always asked to address the congregation at these lovely carol services, however as I have now attended quite a large number I have to ensure that I have new material available as ‘heaven forfend' that I may repeat myself to anyone present, happily to date this has not happened!"

21st December - Mayor of Poole Visits Alderney Hospital
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her husband and Consort Mr David Butt and the Sheriff and his lady and local Members of Parliament, visited long-term patients at Alderney Community Hospital, which provides mental health care beds from Dorset Health Care Trust and acute care from Bournemouth and Poole Primary Care Trust.
There are two Dorset Healthcare NHS Trust in-patient wards with St Brelade's providing assessment and treatment for older people suffering from dementia and Herm Ward providing intermediate care with an Intensive Therapy Unit for patients who require specialist care and treatment. Day services are provided by the Lodge House and the Haymoor Day Hospital. Bournemouth and Poole Primary Care Trust run a further two wards on the site, Jersey and Guernsey, for the rehabilitation of patients leaving Poole General Hospital and a rehabilitation day service, Woodlands. For further information, see www.poolepct.nhs.uk/services/documents/JerseyandGuernseyWards.pdf for Jersey and Guernsey wards and www.poolepct.nhs.uk/services/woodlandsintermediatecareunit.htm for the Woodlands Unit.
Greeted by Hospital Manager Mrs Clare Franklin-May and her senior management team, the Mayor took great delight in meeting many of the patients and visiting relatives, also discussing with Board members their pending bid for Foundation status.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "The care and kindness provided by the staff and relatives of those staying in the hospital is wonderful. The buildings themselves have been carefully planned and make the most of colour and shape to ensure that the patients are comfortable in their surroundings and can negotiate themselves between areas."

20th December - Mayor of Poole Marches with Band
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, presented awards to members of the well-known Dolphin Marching Band at their home base at TS Dolphin in Poole.
The Dolphin Marching Band, which has been operating since 6th June 1996 under the leadership of bandmaster Chris Godber, plays regularly at events around the South West, takes part in national competitions and has even played in Jersey, at Disneyland Paris and at Disneyworld in Florida. For more information about the band, see http://www.dolphinmarchingband.org.uk/.
The event celebrated the tenth anniversary of the band, and the Mayor took great pleasure in presenting commemoration certificates to each band member present. Many youngsters were also presented with awards for outstanding performance. In an unprecedented move, the Mayor and the whole band travelled to the home of their recently retired secretary and marched along her road with the band playing, to present her with an award in gratitude for her ten years of service.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "The Marching Band have a lot to be proud of and are very much synonymous with Poole, being part of its recent and ongoing history. The band has been home to hundreds of youngsters over the years and goes from strength to strength as each year passes. At present they are raising money to re-equip the band as their instruments are decades old, however this does not detract from the sound which has been judged to be amongst the very best Nationally and Internationally. I did not realise that the band plays everything by heart as they carry no sheet music as this spoils the streamlined effect of a marching band! "

20th December - Mayor of Poole Back in Hospital (But Just Visiting!!)
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her husband and Consort Mr David Butt and the Sheriff and his lady, visited patients and staff at Poole Hospital.
Greeted by Poole Hospital Trust Chairman Mr Peter Harvey and Chief Executive Mrs Sue Sutherland, the Mayor was taken on a tour of the wards, and was especially delighted to visit the maternity and children's wards, talking to happy mothers of new-born babies, and encouraging young people suffering from various illnesses, in some cases very serious. In a poignant and emotional moment, the Mayor spent time in Arne ward, where she had been recovering from her very serious illness only a few weeks ago, and gratefully thanked the nursing staff who had taken such good care of her in her time of need.
The tour was followed by a delicious luncheon in the boardroom with members of the Hospital Board, during which the Mayor communicated her intention of joining the Foundation Trust and expressed an interest in becoming a member of the Trust Board to make her management and legal skills available to the hospital. For more information about Poole Hospital, see www.poole.nhs.uk/index.asp.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "There is always someone who is faring a little less well than yourself, but all those whom I met faced their illnesses and discomfort with such bravery and dignity. I met a young lady in her very early twenties who suffers from the terminal condition Cystic Fibrosis, she was so positive about her lot and was determined to be happy and upbeat and just enjoy what she had. There wasn't a hint of self pity or anger about her, I felt so proud of her and the fantastic example she is to other young people who sadly also suffer from this debilitating condition.
She asked to have a picture taken with me in her very special bedroom which was like a Christmas Grotto, I was delighted to agree and will treasure the picture taken with her."

The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, contributed two interviews in a DVD video being made about ‘Chaplaincy at Work'.
Scheduled to give a short interview about the effectiveness of Poole Council's Chaplaincy service, the Mayor acquitted herself so well that she was recalled for a second interview to comment on more specific questions.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "It was great fun and not a bit scary, somehow when faced with a question the answer seems to flow, it may not of course be the right answer but forming the words never seem to be a problem, I don't expect Stephen Spielberg to be knocking at my door just yet though!!!"

18th December - Mayor of Poole Thanks her Helpers
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her husband and Consort Mr David Butt and family, personally organised a Christmas lunch at Le Bateau restaurant in Parkstone as a ‘thank you' to her most active supporters and charity workers, who enjoyed a superb lunch and good company amid a festive atmosphere.
The 24 invitees, all of whom attended, comprised the people who have contributed most towards supporting the Mayor's Charity Appeal Fund, through helping to organise the monthly car boot sales, bucket shake collections in Poole High Street, running the successful Quiz nights, the superb Summer Gala Ball, and the myriad other facets of fund-raising during the last seven months. The lunch was paid for by the Mayor from her personal finances. In true form the Mayor (with more than three people in the room being her excuse for a raffle) raised another £200 for the Mayor's Charity Appeal! The brand new and exciting calendar for 2007 Charity Appeal events is included at the end of this news release.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "My charity support friends are absolute stars and worth their weight in gold, and our charity effort would not be possible without them. But this celebration is not about resting on anybody's laurels, there are lots of exciting events lined up for 2007, especially the Valentine Dinner/Dance and Dogs Dinner/Race Night in February, the Beating of the Sea Bounds in April, the Spring Charity Fair in Poole Park on May Bank Holiday weekend, and my fantastic Farewell Celebration Charity Ball in May (if you want to be sure of my departure from Mayoral Office I hope to see you there!!) as well as lots of other events, including a Bowling Evening in January and a Quiz Night and Barn Dance in March, all of which are being repeated by public demand."

17th December - Mayor of Poole Sings by Candle-Light
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, attended the annual Candle-Lit Carol Concert at St James Church in Poole Old Town.
Led by incumbent Rev Bob Mason, the Mayor read the first of several readings which told the Christmas story, mixed with songs by the church choir and favourite carols.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "There were over 750 candles lit at the commencement of the service and all other lights were extinguished, the whole church was bathed in a soft golden glow and this really made you feel as if you were that little bit closer to heaven! The singing was particularly good as the church was packed with regular congregation and many visitors who all knew the much loved carols almost by heart, I certainly do now!"

16th December - Mayor of Poole Sings at Old Rope Walk
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her husband and Consort Mr David Butt and the Sheriff and his lady, attended a carol concert staged by the youth choir of the Salvation Army at The Old Rope Walk in Hamworthy.
Founded more than a century ago, the Owen-Carter charity, with support from Poole Council, operates 42 homes for retired Poole residents in Hamworthy and Poole Town, and recently celebrated their centenary. The Hamworthy bungalows, 10 of which date to the beginning of the last century and the rest to the 1960s, are much in demand in the town. For further information about the Owen Carter charity, see www.housingcorp.gov.uk/server/show/ConRSL.216.
The Mayor, who is popular at this venue from previous visits, was welcomed by the Owen Carter Trustees, following which the concert was introduced by Mrs Gwen Barnett, one of the residents at The Old Rope Walk. The communal carol-singing was interspersed with songs superbly sung by five young people from the Salvation Army.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "The residents here are wonderful and I always feel I am among friends when I visit. It is always a delight to see everyone again and I look forward to another visit very soon."

16th December - Mayor of Poole Distributes Parcels
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her husband and Consort Mr David Butt, launched the annual Christmas ‘Food Parcel' distribution run commencing at Uplands School.
Organised by the Poole Parcels Fund every year since 1932, the distribution is sponsored jointly by Poole Lions, Poole Rotary Club and Poole branch of Soroptomists International, the parcels being packed by the Cooperative at Christchurch and distributed by volunteers. The parcels contain essential food items as well as some little luxuries, and are taken to the poor and needy of the Borough by members of the sponsoring clubs, who are asked to report back on any possible concerns and any people where they consider further help is needed.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "It was a ‘sparrows croak' start, David and I left the house in darkness with the dew still dripping off the front porch door well before 8am!! We arrived to a crowd of marvellous volunteers from the organising agencies and a broad smile and welcome from Mr John Duckenfield, one of the main coordinators of the event. There were over 300 hundred parcels to distribute, but the well seasoned team have the whole lot done and dusted in time for early ‘elevenses'. With their constant devotion year in year out the residents of Poole that really need the help are assured of a little cheer every Christmas season."

15th December - Mayor of Poole Attends Christmas Concert
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her husband and Consort Mr David Butt, the Sheriff and his Lady, the Mayor and Mayoress of Wareham, Deputy Mayoress of Wimborne and other honoured guests attended a Christmas Concert, organised and performed by the Poole Corp of the Salvation Army at the Lighthouse in conjunction with Poole Rotary Club, the proceeds being donated equally to Life Education Dorset and the Poole Parcels Fund (see next news item). For more information about the Salvation Army in Poole, see www.poolesa.org/index.html.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "The evening was filled with music, singing, dance, drama and prestidigitation!! It was truly enchanting, engaging the audience throughout the performance. I was asked unexpectedly to go on stage and address the audience, which I duly did with pleasure. The magician had sworn the audience to secrecy regarding his sleight of hand movements, ie if anyone identified how he did a trick they were to remain silent, I pointed out to Major Ron the fabulous magic man that as the audience was safely 50 years plus the chances of anyone seeing the stage were minimal let alone his amazing and dexterous sleight of hand!!! Major Ron had also alluded to the wonderful blaze of lights that could be seen in the vicinity of houses throughout the Borough this Christmas, I challenged this assumption as with three teenage children my house blazed with light December through to November as the art of flicking the switch off is a total anathema to anyone with a one before their second digit of age! (Subtle but think about it) !"
15th December - Mayor of Poole Opens Up
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her husband and Consort Mr David Butt and her three children Daniel, Charlie and Georgina, held an Open Day in her Parlour for Councillors, senior Council staff and invited guests.
The first visitors arrived even before the advertised start time of 11am, and the Parlour was never empty until well beyond the intended finish at 6pm. Guests included Council staff and Councillors of both parties, many local organisation leaders and business people who had assisted the Mayor in her charity work, personal friends and family, and a late influx of senior Council managers as they ended their busy working days, with Poole's Chief Executive Mr John McBride making a last minute but very welcome appearance.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "Mike my chauffeur and Mace Bearer was fantastic, having long experience in the hospitality industry and Senior Management of Air Crew, he wasted no time in putting together a delicious running buffet, in fact he kept it running for 7 hours!!! I thought it would be a nice change from the rather formal traditional gathering in one of the larger meeting rooms that is held each year. The Parlour is decorated just as your sitting rooms are at present with a Christmas tree and trimmings around the fireplace, crackers (really cheesy ones) and holly on the mantelpiece and cards bedecking the whole room. My children kindly helped out in the decorations and this really made for a delightful day to share a little Christmas goodwill with all my visitors!"

14th December - Mayor of Poole in the Lamplight
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, took part in the annual Town Centre Community Carol Singing Lantern Procession commencing in Falkland Square, organized by Liz Lean PR in conjunction with Poole Town Centre Management and Breeze Volkswagon the event's sponsor.
After touring the German market in Falkland Square and sampling the deliciously warming Gluhwein (mulled wine), the Mayor led the Lantern procession down the length of the High Street to the Waterfront Museum and back past St James Church to the Guildhall, happily calling and waving to passers-by and residents as she went, inviting them all to join her and the revellers at the foot of the Guildhall steps for Carols and mince pies. She was followed by two ladies on stilts, a group of children carrying Christmas lanterns from St Aldhelm's School, a super Samba Band from Baden Powell School, the Poole and Parkstone Male Voice Choir, children from the local brownies and an ever-growing band of late-night shoppers curious to see what was going on, earning herself a new nickname of ‘The Pied Piper of Poole'! On arrival at the Guildhall, the Mayor took a microphone and led the huge and happy throng in a succession of carols, culminating in ‘Away in a Manger' especially for the children, while volunteers passed around complimentary mulled wine and mince pies from the Angel public house. The crowd then reluctantly melted away back to their late night shopping, with the High Street still buzzing with life late into the evening.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "I decided to wear my Mayoral robes as this clearly identified me to the hundreds of children as their Mayor. The procession was so colourful I fitted in perfectly and caught the eye and of course the ear of all passers by! I again had the opportunity to sing with a huge accompaniment, the children far outdoing the adults on most of the carols. It was a lovely cheerful, uplifting and thoroughly exhilarating evening. I very much look forward to joining in with everyone next year, this is definitely an event that families can safely attend. "

14th December - Mayor of Poole Makes Plans with Town Centre Manager
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, met Mrs Gaynor Forryan, Town Centre Manager, in her Parlour.
Gaynor is being extremely supportive in the two huge events, amongst others that the Mayor is spearheading for next year. There is much advice and guidance required in order for the planned events to run smoothly and Gaynor in the very short time she has been in Poole has been a true inspiration in ideas and planning for 2007. For more information about Poole Town Centre, see www.pooletowncentre.com/.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "With the planned Ice Rink in February, the Beating of the Bounds in April, the Mayor's Charity Spring Fair in May, to name but a few, Gaynor easily matches my enthusiasm and drive to ensure that these events are a real success for Poole and its residents. There is much to look forward to in the New Year and I know with Gaynor's advice and counsel they will be a true success for everyone."

14th December - Mayor of Poole Lunches at Fourways
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her husband and Consort Mr David Butt attended a Christmas Lunch at Fourways Day Centre and drew a special Christmas raffle. For more information about Fourways, see www.boroughofpoole.com/servicetitles.asp?id=0216EA67EFD343&title=Fourways.
Special guests included Mr Charlie Sheldrick, Head of Poole Council's Adult Social Services, and Cllr Miss Elaine Atkinson, Portfolio Holder for the same.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "The volunteers and staff served up a delicious Christmas meal with two starter and main course choices followed by a selection of four puddings. David and I shared the time between as many diners as possible taking each course with a different table, much to the delight of the Christmas Luncheon guests. I drew the raffle and as usual I won a prize and as is customary it is set to appear at a raffle very near you in the not too distant future! We finished the meal with a sing song with David and I leading everyone in a verse of ‘We Wish you a Merry Christmas'. It was a lovely celebration and David and I felt very honoured to have been invited to share such a special Christmas festivity."

13th December - Mayor of Poole Joins in Carol Concert Rehearsal
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, joined in the final rehearsal of the Borough of Poole choir in preparation for the Carol Concert in the Council Chamber on 19th December at 12,30pm.
With the Mayor planning to sing as part of the choir (believed to be an all-time first), the difficult routine is now well-versed with the singers drawn from Poole Council staff making it seem easy and sound fabulous.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "This concert will be wonderful and I would encourage everyone to come along and join in. My fellow choristers are amazing and cover my droning quite successfully!! I have been attending choir practice since October and have thoroughly enjoyed working with Mr Peter Blundell of the Salvation Army who has led us all in our endeavours. There is to be a guest speaker and a guest soloist who are both purported to be well worth listening to, so I hope to see you there."

13th December - Mayor of Poole Talks about Twinning
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, met Mr Larry Rumbol, local and international businessman, in her Parlour to talk about the possibility of importing a pair of Looe Luggers to Poole and to explore the Mayor's suggestion of a potential future twinning with Friesland in Holland.
Mr Rumbol, already an active member of Poole Yacht Club and a great supporter of the Mayor's chosen charities, pointed out that most Poole residents stand on the Quay ‘watching' the minority, (by comparison), sail past. With the Mayor's support he is keen to re-introduce traditional sailing vessels and skills to Poole, initially in the form of a pair of ‘Looe Luggers' for which he wants to offer sail training. The Mayor has enthusiastically supported the idea since its inception and suggested coordinating a ‘Festival of the Sea' with her Spring Fair planned for 6th and 7th May 2007, allowing the two events to support each other. For more information about Looe Luggers, see www.looecornwall.com/index.cfm?articleid=1200.
Regarding the potential future twinning, Friesland is a similar seaside town in Holland with a large harbour and a long maritime tradition which would be a natural partner for Poole, although the necessary procedures will be elongated over at least the next two years and will obviously be completed under the auspices of a future Mayor of the time. For more information about Friesland, see www.frieslandholland.nl/uk/index.html.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "The ‘Looe Luggers' concept is a very exciting project and should involve many partners in it's delivery and success, which will in turn enhance and benefit Poole as a whole, attracting visitors from all over the entire South of England and across the Channel. I will do all that I can to set the plans in motion regarding the possibility of Twinning with Friesland in Holland, there is much to be done, starting with EC approval, it will also be a first for Poole, I am sure that our super Poole Twinning Committee will give strong support to make our planned proposal a reality. 13th December - Mayor of Poole Celebrates Wish List Success
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, attended a celebration of Poole Hospital's Wish List at St Mary's Longfleet Church.
The Wish List, which has been running for 3 years, has been highly successful in raising a total of £400,000 to date, including donations from local businesses, individuals and from the Mayor's Charity Fund. The current focus is to raise funds for a new hydrotherapy pool. For more information, see www.poole.nhs.uk/the_wish_list/index.asp.
The celebration service, which was introduced by Poole Hospital Chief Executive Peter Harvey, told the Christmas story through carols and various readings given by senior managers from Poole Hospital Trust.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "As usual and now fast becoming my anticipated trademark, I dug up a few appropriate seasonal ‘tall stories' and entertained the congregation at the end of the service. I also enlarged a little on my recent dramatic illness and how sometimes the good Lord and science can work in tandem to brilliant effect!"

13th December - Mayor of Poole Launches new Support Group
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her husband and Consort Mr David Butt and the Mayor and Mayoress of Bournemouth, launched the new Friends of Age Concern support group at a traditional Christmas tea party at Harriett's Restaurant in Poole.
The new group, which is to be chaired by Mr Peter Charon, is to concentrate on heightening the profile of Age Concern and fund-raising for the charity. Based initially in Bournemouth, the group hopes to expand into Poole in the near future.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "What a great idea, I have been the guest of several Friendship Clubs over the Christmas season, one of some 32 years standing and they are a terrific asset to the community and those who benefit from their inclusiveness and empathy. The tea was scrumptious and the owner has very kindly offered to put on a Special Mayoral ‘T' (you can't say I don't try) with a Nostalgia Quiz to raise funds for my Mayor's Charities, I shall be getting this organised in the New Year, more info to follow later!!"

12th December - Mayor of Poole Plans Lighthouse Event
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, accompanied by her secretary, met with the Lighthouse management to plan her Civic Awards event in January 2007.
Whilst working out how to make the event a success, albeit with some differences from previous years, the Mayor was intrigued by the operation of the main concert hall. A very regular attendee at Concerts, she learned that the hall can be changed from an auditorium into a dinner and dance hall by means of both stage and floors which can be raised and lowered and seats which can be slid forward and concealed under the stage, enabling radical changes of configuration in as little as a couple of hours.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "I am so looking forward to the Civic Awards ceremony on January 19th next year and welcoming all my award nominees and guests on the evening. This year my theme has been focused on ‘the volunteer in the community' and I have a short list of amazing achievers in this regard. This event takes a huge amount of planning and my secretarial team and I wish to ensure that it is seamless and enjoyable for everyone. The management have been wonderful in the provision they are making and are doing all they can to make the evening a true success."

11th December - Mayor of Poole Announces Wishing Tree
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, launched the annual ‘Wishing Tree' Appeal at Poole Council's Civic Centre, in support of the Poole Women's Refuge. This initiative was the brainchild of Cllr Mrs Mary Hillman and Cllr Miss Elaine Atkinson who were both instigational in ensuring that the much needed refuge in Poole became a reality some two years ago.
The Christmas tree, located at the Members' Entrance at the Civic Centre, carries the Christmas wishes of a number of young children who, with their mothers, are living at a refuge operated by Poole Council. Aimed primarily at Councillors and Council staff, passers-by are invited to take a wish from the tree and buy a Christmas present for a disadvantaged youngster. This scheme was operated successfully for the first time last year, and looks set to become a Christmas tradition. The Mayor started off the ‘Wish Appeal' by choosing two labels for a boy and a girl.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "This is a delightful way to support some of the most vulnerable within our communities. Please visit the tree and chose a label, you will be astounded at the simplistic and meagre gifts that the little ones are asking for. Again please make their Christmas a special one this year and make yourself feel good too!"

11th December - Mayor of Poole Raises an Umbrella
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, formally ‘planted' a Japanese Umbrella tree at Upton Country Park to mark the 30th anniversary of the Friends of Upton Country Park. For more information about the Friends, see www.uptoncountrypark.org/.
With heavy rain having turned the garden into a quagmire, the ‘planting' of necessity took place indoors at the Peacock Tearooms with the Mayor using the ceremonial Silver Spade from the Regalia to pile a little dry earth into the pot in which the tree sat. The pot is to be planted out properly by the professional Park Rangers as soon as there is a break in the weather.
The near planting was attended by many friends and community colleagues of the Mayor, including officers of Poole Council, Rangers who maintain Upton Country Park, historians from Poole Historical Trust and, most importantly, the young people with learning difficulties who staff the Tearooms.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "It was a tad wet and with so many attending on the day we would have sunk in mud and worse still my stilettos would have got a wee bit mucky. I was a little taken aback when a cat litter shaped tray was pushed forward full of what looked like brown cat litter, I checked to see that it was unsullied, made certain this was the case, some bright spark from the attendees shouted out ‘Madame Mayor I can assure you that the earth in the tray is completely unsoiled!', beat that for a play on words!"
