Wheelie Bins

I expect that Calderdale's Cabinet will approve the Waste Management Policy and Strategy on 4th Dec as recommended. There will no doubt be some outcries as time goes by and when aspects, of what will then be approved Policy are implemented. We all know about the outcry last year when the former Tory Porfolio holder proposed a charge for bin bags. Will the newly appointed Tory accountable for the present proposals get a less hostile reception for what is basically the same proposals as before, albeit better hidden and recycled in a different way? There are two immediate concerns in the present Policy proposals.

The voluntary & community sector, well established, with good performance and many added advantages has been excluded from a direct arrangement with the Council.

Do the people, and I mean Rastrick here, understand and really want a 2 weekly wheelie bin service? Do they want to see their street scenes littered with sentinals in black and green along every pavement? Do they have places to store wheelies when not out for collection? Will people really wheel them back after they have been emptied or will they leave them at their gates 24/7, notwitstanding that thy will blow or be pushed over, set fire to and generally otherwise abused?

This issue of wheelie bins poses advantages and disadvantages. We too have been considering it.
On the positive side they are a more secure way of storing waste and help to stop rodents and birds getting at the rubbish and making more litter as well they can be easier to empty providing the vehicles have the correct attachment.
on the negative side thay may possibly lead to an increase in waste arisings as people may be tempted to fill them up with inappropriate materials. I have heard that car batteries sometimes get disposed of in such bins.
Also they may be inappropriate for houses where there is no easy access to somewhere to store the bin out of site. If in a terrace house it may be inappropriate to wheel the bin through the house every week.
we feel that they do have a place but are not right for every house and that a range of options needs to be available.

I agree with Stephen's last comment, they are not always universally appropriate. Especially in hilly, many terraced homes areas like Calderdale. Sadly I feel it will be an either all or nothing and the flexibility we need for the public will not be available

Id like to know when calderdale council is going to provide free wheelie bins and also recycling bins to residents, as bradford seem to pay less council tax and have 3 wheelie bins and also a garden waste sack as they seem to get everything.
As i have to purchae my own garden waste sack myself and take it to the tip myself, however in bradford you dont the bin men take them.
Why is this!!! Unfair if you ask me!

Thanks for your comment. I speculate that you will have wheelie bins soon enough. Not sure how many and not sure if there will be a charge for them as we lesser mortal councillors are not allowed to know much about the waste contract bidding process. Of one thing we can be certain, there will not be a reduction in council tax this year, rather the usual, higher than inflation increase. Watch this space, don't think you have seen the extent of 'unfair' yet.
