Brighouse Swimming Pool
Council officers David Calderwood and Duncan Brundell (Pools Project Manager) will be providing Jean Trotter from the Brighouse Echo with an update briefing in relation to developments around Brighouse Pool next Wednesday (3 September 2008).
The briefing will be to discuss progress so far and next steps for the project.
Councillors are advised that Jean may be in touch as part of her article therefore if there is anything they would like to discuss or clarify, they should not hesitate to contact Duncan or David.
How about an update briefing for Councillors?
The rest of the Brighouse Area.... watch out for Thursday's Echo!!!
Weekend Voting
or Gordon's ‘Wunder-Waffen' to get re-elected, whenever the General Election is called?
The Government has announced that it wishes to consult about shifting Election Day from Thursdays to the Weekends to ‘make voting more accessible and encourage a higher turnout.' It feels this will ‘reinvigorate democracy and forge a new relationship between the citizen and the state'.
Hey Gordon, the best way to do this is to have an election next week, any day you choose and let The People make a democratic choice about you!
Of course, only a cynic would think that shifting Election Day to the weekend is the ‘big bang weapon' in the Government's armoury to win the war... sorry, election. Pretty well all boundaries have now been manipulated.... sorry re-drawn, to aid a Labour vote, what else is left? Burning down Parliament, blaming a religious minority (proberbly the Muslims rather than the Jews) and declaring marshall law and a further term for the Government for the sake of the Nation's stability could be ‘the final solution'.
No, but a real cynic may say, no chance of weekends, the religious lobby will not want this.... not the Sunday Brigade.... the Friday/Saturday lot will scupper this me boyo!
Seriously, anybody wishing to get consulted, click on.....

UK Population UP
The Nation's population is reported to have grown to an all time high. Over 61 million. Not so long ago I remember our population was 58 million. Births to foreign-born mothers are substantially up.
Is anybody thinking what I'm thinking?

'Pity Poor Kerbside'
When will that well known English sign be used by Calderdale? You know, the one Churchill used and was first made famous by the English bowmen of the past when fighting the French.
For information, here is the latest twist....in a message from Jonathan Phillips, Group Director, Health and Social Care. BRIEFING NOTE FOR MEMBERS.
Household Recycling Collections in Hebden Bridge, Todmorden, Sowerby Bridge, Mytholmroyd, Skircoat, Copley and Mixenden
As you are aware SITA UK Ltd have been unable to reach agreement with Kerbside Calderdale on the provision of household recycling collections in the Borough.
Consequently, Kerbside Calderdale have continued to provide a service to the areas above since 4th August 2008 on their own account.
SITA have a contract with the Council to collect recycling materials from every household. To avoid conflict, SITA agreed not to remove any material left out in a "Kerbside" container or anything placed around that container. However it was decided to temporarily suspend SITA recycling collections because of the risk of disputes at collection times.
The Council has a duty to provide a service to those households and must use the Council's Waste Contractor, SITA UK Ltd, who was selected as a result of a competitive tender process. This means that SITA collections need to restart.
The intention is to do this in a way which will minimise the risk of any further escalation of tension whilst further efforts are made to mediate between the parties.
In order to distinguish between SITA and Kerbside boxes SITA UK Ltd were asked to order and deliver green boxes to those areas where Kerbside were formerly sub contracted by Focsa Services to provide the service.
SITA will commence delivery of the green boxes and bags plus an explanatory leaflet (attached) and a calendar of collections (attached) on Tuesday, 26th August 2008. It is planned that all deliveries will be complete by the 8th September 2008, when actual collections of recyclable materials will commence.
In order to minimise the risk of disputes over materials left out by householders, collections will be made on the alternate week to collections being made by Kerbside. The attached leaflet makes it clear that if people do not want their recycling collected by SITA they can return the green box.
I hope that this arrangement provides a satisfactory balance between the Council carrying out its statutory duties while respecting the strength of local feeling.
I will be making Kerbside aware of the situation.

Rastrick Bridge End
Community Action Group.... well done! This new group is to be congratulated for what they have achieved so far. I agree with the Courier Comment, many individuals working together can still achieve some good results against the heavy wheels of Government's central control over us.
