The newspapers have now deserted him, but has he deserved this morning’s final axe blow from Auntie Beeb? The final shot on his mate AM’s show pictured Gordon below a red sign in bold letters saying GOODBYE.

The shot, the colour and the softly spinning significance of it all was hard to escape.

And in the words of Dame Vera. We’ll probably not meet again.
