Ward Cllrs Capey, Bell and myself had meeting today with Alan Coe and Mark Palethorpe to challenge the proposed closure of Fenton Work shops.

 default

We have explored all possibilities and are waiting to officers to come back to us with answers to several questions, should closure be unavoidable we have asked for assurances that as may staff as possible are re-deployed, Stoke Workshops currently employ approx 50 staff, mainly with visual or physical impairments. The workshops are losing the City approx £400 K per annum due to recent downturns in sales due to the economic climate.

The drinking fountain that once proudly stood at Victoria Place before being moved to Fenton Park to make way for the roundabout during previous road works has been moved back home

The fountain donated to "The People of Fenton " by the Baker Family was  subsequently vandalised, broken into 3 pieces and left in disrepair has now been refurbished and moved back where it really belongs in Fenton Town Centre.

Passers by in City Road have commented that its great to see it again, people who didnt know it even existed are amazed at a piece of Fenton's history re surfacing !

Drinking in public to be restricted

Fenton will soon be at the forefront of anti social behavior reduction when 2 new Alcohol Restriction Zones come into practice, the zones are around Heron Cross and the Albert Square areas, once on place it will become an offence for anyone to refuse to hand over any alocholic beverage to a police officer when requested to do so.

There are several other areas dotted around the city.            default

Other areas in Fenton and city wide will be considered at a later date subject to sufficient need being established.

Its hoped that this initiative will greatly reduce the nusiance and anti social behavior associated with on street drinking.

ROAD SIGNSdefault

As part of the on going street scene enhancements to Fenton 7 new road signs are soon to be erected at each of the main road entries to the Town saying "Welcome to Fenton" the signs will display the Fenton Coat of Arms, I am currently trying to get a colour copy of the Fenton crest produced for use on the new signs, however we don't believe that a colour version exists except on the floor of Fenton Library in a fantastic tile mosaic.

DRIVERS BEWARE

New powers shortly will be available to the City Council to enforce traffic viloations, one area of regualr offences is the no entry on Christchurch St. Drivers often totally ignore the no entry sign and turn onto City Road and sometimes go the wrong way down the no entry on Temple Street..

If you notice that the CCTV camera is often pointing down, its not broken, its gaining evidence.

If you are caught commting the offence, you will be fined.Lets make Fenton safer for everyone and drive sensibly and within the law.

FENTON MARKET EXTENSION ?      default

A piece of land behind the advertising hordings on the City Road car park has been identified as a possible extension to the popular Fenton open market on Thursday. The land was believed to be in the ownership of the Lichfield Diocise but is now believed to be owned by JC Decaux the owners of the hordings.

Council officers are trying to establish whether the land could be either purchased or leased by the Council to extend the market site.

Currently the land is occasionally used as a drinking den by teenagers, the site if accquired would enable the market to move back increasing its size by nearly 50%, additionally if this were possible the market could move away from the car park entrance, making a safer route for pedestrians.

A POLICE PRESENCE BACK IN FENTON AFTER 30 YEARS ?

Meeting with Cllr Bate and Steve Robinson to discuss viability of introducing a Police Post to Fenton, we have identified several possibilities but the favorite is the old caretakers house on City Rd. The Police are in favour of a post because the new neighbourhood policing agenda will mean more and area specific police on the ward.

Have also had site meetings with officers to agree the siting for new cast iron waste bins (7) which are to be locateed within the Fenton Town Center boundry, and the locations of new benches.

defaultLaughing Today I had a meeting with Stoke South MP Rob Flello and fellow ward Councillor Stan Bate, we are trying to ensure that the Cenotaph in Albert Square next to the Magistrates Court is illuminated with recessed LED uplighting ideally before this years rememberance sunday in November. We will be bidding for additional funding to add to the existing PFI project that will replace the current lighting in the Fenton conservation area with heritage style lighting more sympathetic to the square.

Albert Square is undoubtedly one of the most attractive Squares in the City and will be further enhanced once the lighting project is completed.
