17 Hour Drinks licence - no thanks

Tesco have applied for a licence to sell alcohol at their new convenience food store in Englishcombe Lane from 6am to 11pm.  We asked residents what they thought and have had almost universal concern about the length of time.

Alcohol is now being sold from so many stores and outlets often at discount and in promotions - is it any wonder that we have a binge drinking problem in society.

I think we need to start restricting sales both in terms of outlets and length of hours and discounts and promotions should certainly not be allowed.

Dine and Paul would like to thank all the residents who have emailed or written or telephoned or stopped us in the streets on this issue.

Early result from Southdown PACT

At the Southdown Pact meeting on Monday night residents requested an additional litter bin (if possible) to add to the one already in situ at the Mount Road parade of shops. The residents felt this would help alleviate the litter problem within the precinct area.

An additional litter bin has now been aquired which will be in place before June.

A request was also made to get the front of Mount Road Shops washed down. This has been organised for this Thursday (early morning). Hopefully this will tidy up the appearance overall of the precinct.

Another request was to clean up the chewing gum on tyhe pavements at the parade.

The Graffiti team will spend the best part of Thursday morning there if they need to to get it cleaned up.

TOP THREE priorities voted on

1. Traffic calming in Mount Road .

2. More activities for youths (investment in youths required)

3. Build a better relationship between youths and the police.

Law and Order : Ward Surgeries : Multi Faith Service

The Southdown and Twerton area have been experiencing a lot of burglary and anti social behaviour over recent months and the four councillors are working hard with the community, police and other agencies to solve this problem. Much more information is now coming forward and many successful arrests and raids have been made in recent weeks. On Monday Twerton had its first PACT meeting (Partners and communities together - a local police initiative) and I went along, even though it is for the neighbouring ward. It was a good meeting with both complaints and praise , with both negative and positive. A key message given by Cllr Tim Ball - 'if someone offers you a plasma TV for £25 - it has been stolen - REPORT IT - DONT BUY IT.'

The next day Cllr Curran and Cllr Crossley had a meeting with Inspector Corrigan at the police station to cover a range of issues. The extra police resource to our area will remain. Good News. We also discussed the need for more Neighbourhood Watch and discussed how we could set these up on a more Community lead way rather than being simply information flows between police and co-ordinarors as they mainly are in this area at present. We also discussed how we set about reactivating non-performing NW. This will require the police to let go on their control a bit if we are to better work in partnership.

Saturday was our regular Southdown surgery - issues raised during the day - adoption problems, housing rent problems, Somer garage area issues and of course litter.

Each year the Mayor has two civic services - a Christian one at the start of the year and a Multi Faith one at the start of February. This year the multi-faith event was packed out with 7 faiths ( Bahai, Buddhism, Sikh, Hindu, Islam, Judaism and Christianity) coming together to share their views on the Mayor's theme of the year - Caring. There is so much more that unites faiths than divides them. This service is one of the annual events that helps create such goodwill and shared value in our community and that makes Bath such a nice place to live.
