Councillor of Stonnall Ward, Lichfield
Cllr David S. Smith was born in Birmingham and was Chairman of the West Midlands Local Government Association from June 2003 until July 2008 and has recently stepped down as Chairman of the West Midlands Regional Assembly.
He has also been Leader of Lichfield District Council between 1999 and 2010 known as the greenest local authority in the country and named as number one in terms of waste recycling.
David has been at the forefront of the introduction of e-government into local authorities, formulating information technology strategy and policy, promoting best practice across government and delivering citizen-centred online services.
His service was recognised by Staffordshire University who awarded him with an honourary doctorate.
He was Chairman of Lichfield Venture, which is tasked with the economic regeneration of the Lichfield District, where they have attracted inward investment of £400m. and created over 5000 new jobs.
David served on three major national boards at the Local Government Association and also sat on the board of West Midlands in Europe and the West Midlands Region Marketing Board and the West Midlands Enterprise Board. He is also a Justice of the Peace.
For 20 years David ran his own advertising and PR agency in Lichfield, having previously held a range of Chief Executive roles in publishing, computer systems, entertainment and the fashion industries.
