Speed

My driving licence has just been returned with three points endorsed on it - my very first. I'm not proud of it and I'm not making excuses (well, only to myself). But I can use this platform to warn you!

You see, some years ago the local Lib Dems campaigned with Ed Davey to have a 50mph limit on the A3 where it passes through the borough. The stretch between Hook and Tolworth is particularly dangerous, with very narrow lanes and no side escape route going south. And to our delight the 50mph restriction was installed.

Now I'd always assumed that this started at the Hook Junction as you come into the borough from Surrey. But it doesn't - it starts some way further out along the A3. And there is a sneaky wholly sensible camera by the Clayton Road bridge. In fact, I very rarely drive along that section; when I come off the M25 I normally leave the A3 at the Esher turnoff.  So I didn't notice the signs and truly thought I was OK doing 65mph.

But as I said, no excuses, just a warning....

Mary,
Sorry to read about your experience. it happened to me on the M11 in 1994 and I've never forgotten it. There should have been a large '50' sign to warn you of the beginning of the speed limit area and another to warn of the presence of cameras. Perhaps it's either not there or somewhat obscured by trees, in which case it's TfL's fault.

Thanks for the sympathy, Paul. Actually it's outside the TfL area - the notice came from Surrey Police. I'll have another look next time I drive that way.

I think that that might be the bit that's responsible for the 3 points on my licence too...it was Surrey Police then as well but I thought I was still OK. I am so careful not to speed normally. I'm not proud of mine either, especially after 17 years of a clean driving licence.

One unusual thing that is odd is that the speed limits are different on each side of the road here - it is 70 after the Hook Roundabout going out of London, but 50 coming in. That is unusual, although there may well be good reasons for it (going down from three lanes to two and cars joining coming in spring to mind), making people used to 50 by the Hook Roundabout before the really dangerous section.
I actually find this one of the easier speed cameras to obey - it is well signed (both sides of the carriageway from memory), the road narrows, the speed camera is obvious and every one slows down, which is the easiest way to spot what has happened. I am pretty sure all the signs were there on Sunday when I came back from Wisley.
As you say, it is a good place to have a speed camera, because it is the sort of place where people have been driving at motorway speeds for a while, and the road ahead is too dangerous for more than 50.
Sorry you were caught - but I bet you remember next time!
Tim
That said, I have never understood why, if we are going to paint speed cameras yellow, we don't have the speed printed on the back of them.
