Post offices saved - and Mandelson returns to his old tricks
Huge relief all round at the news that the Government is cancelling the tender process for the Post Office Card Account, and will instead draw up a contract directly with Post Office Ltd.
If the contract had been awarded to Pay Point - which seemed quite likely - then we would have pretty well seen the end of local post offices.
So what was Mandelson up to yesterday? At the time it seemed like a principled stand; now I'm afraid it looks more like trying to steal the thunder from Purnell. I was taken in - and should have known better given his track record.
