Jacko and Henry VIII
What do these two have in common?
Both liked and wrote a bit of music. Both had 3 children to a various number of wives. Both well known through out their respective known worlds. Both well-heeled and both lived in ‘palaces'. Both admired for their legs. Jacko for what he could do with them and Henry's for their shapeliness.
Both died in their early 50's. Bodies abused and knackered? Henry's certainly was. Is there a lesson for those of us also in our early 50's? I would say so.

Twittering, Now I've got it!
Have had a Twitter for some time. I was encouraged to get one after reading an article in the Local Government magazine. It promoted Twittering as another and growing means of communication with the local electorate. I joined up as RastrickCrusade. First part of the learning curve was discovering that the number of letters in your ‘handle' were restricted; I really wanted ‘Rastrick Crusader'. Two too many to Twitter!
I have put a few comments on and find following the local press and Jodrell Bank very useful. Over the weekend I heard Twittering described as a mini blog. Now I understand much better what a ‘twitter' is and why I should blog and twitter too!
But, what's a Face Book? Can anybody please give me an easy to understand description of one of those?
PS. Notice the use of ‘handle'? Old CBers term; showing my age.

Why I refused to take a Scrutiny Committee Seat.
I am not ‘in' local politics for the money, the quedos or for a personal ego trip.
Those elected to represent should do just that. I believe the main role of a Councillor is to be a local advocate and not a ‘Cheer Leader'.
I am not prepared to support in any way the ways of The Establishment ‘old boys comfortable carry on club'. A ‘carry on' which has seen local democracy dead and buried by an ‘Axis Agreement' or ‘Unholy Alliance' between Calderdale's power-crazed Councillors from Labour and Tory Parties. Sitting through meetings which ‘tick ‘ a few establishment boxes, and which provide a vehicle for a few local Councillor's ego trips are not ways I intend to spend my time. There are a great many meetings in my ward where volunteers and local people actually do things in and for their communities and neighbourhoods. I choose to support such meetings instead. I believe in Public Service, I do not believe in back patting establishment cronies.
Politically speaking, I believe a local representative should be a radical and right thinking person with a common sense head on their shoulders who challenges the systems of local administration or ‘control' irrespective if this ‘control' is
- Arms length control from Westminster of the highly paid ‘Professional Political Classes'. (The Government's Gau system). MPs not in the Government seem more like ‘cheer leaders' to me, rather than representatives of the people put there to be a balance and check to the executive.
- Local Officer control or
- Control by the amateur ‘Professional Political Classes' of the Lead Councillors in both Labour and Tory Groups. Firstly they put their own bums on Cabinet or Scrutiny chair seats, which pay the most ‘extra' money. They then use other seats which have lower ‘extra allowances' to buy off some off their better-informed junior colleagues, keeping them quiet and sweet. Most of the ‘other' Councillors in these groups fall under the same heading as MPs not in the Government.
Any further clarification, leave a comment or send me an email to paul@rastrick.org.uk.
And, who says the media is hostile to the establishment system? See link- BNP's Bates to sit on young people's panel at http://www.halifaxcourier.co.uk/news/BNP39s-Bates-to-sit-on.5346259.jp
I didn't think the Courier handling of this issue was sympathetic to the causes of freedom and radical thought in the slightest! Perhaps they thought that the BNP dimension was so overwhelming? My ducks line up differently.- »Permalink

Chris needs Timmy's help so bad?
I have added a new word to my vocabulary, REDACTED. What do you think it means?
Curiosity got the better of me and I opened my MP's expenses claims on the online Houses of Parliament website. Kept seeing this regular consultancy payment of £1250 but the name and details were redacted. Then, on pg 74 the name was missed from redaction and that experienced Labour campaigner and architect of the ‘Axis Arrangement' with the local Tories, Tim Swift, was there for all to see. Raises more questions than I can write in a few lines on this blog, any body out there got a view as well?
On the other hand, whatever our Westminster MPs have been up to, it seems the Brussels ones can do much better.
Open Europe's comparison, based on the respective parliaments' budget allocations, finds that while national MPs at Westminster on average claim up to £148,297 in allowances each year, their counterparts in Brussels can claim up to £363,000 per year. Furthermore, MEPs do not have to produce receipts to claim their allowances, in contrast with national MPs.

How about this for a fix?
I have received a copy of the round email entitled:-
AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER
Please find below my suggestion for fixing Britain's economy. Instead of giving billions of pounds to banks that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan :
There are about 20 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them £1 million apiece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:
1) They MUST retire. Twenty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.
2) They MUST buy a new British CAR. Twenty million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed.
3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed.
4) They must send their kids to school / college /university - Crime rate fixed
5) Buy £50 of alcohol / tobacco a week there's your money back in duty / tax etc
It can't get any easier than that!

What now the BNP are in EU?
The sound of British jack boots crunching into the European Parliament will, I hope, focus the minds of PM Brown and OL Cameron on what is really important.
What is NOT important is this distraction about Brown resigning or about a quick General Election.
What IS important are just 3 things:-
1. A referendum on EU membership and an exit strategy if the vote is UK out.
2. Cleaning up the institutionalized, anti-democratic, professional political class system, oppressive red tape and political correctness including but not just cleaning up how our representatives (and not their duck ponds) are paid.
3. Getting UK business back on its feet, creating jobs for our people and stopping people from other countries coming into the UK to undercut wages and undermine conditions.
All of these things are interdependent and need to be done together. How about appointing a Tsar, winner of The Apprentice?- »Permalink

D-Day for English Democrats?
There are many things on my mind today.
D-Day, the historical event, the remembrance, the fact that our Queen wasn't invited.
The new elected Mayor of Doncaster, The English Democrat, Peter Davies. Well done Peter, family and team! Lets hope this is the Departure Day to many more wins for the EDP.
PM Brown's cabinet reshuffle. The ability to appoint Sugar and maintain Mandelson in Government is the only advantage I can see of an un-elected House of Lords.
The Euro results; will any BNP be elected as MEPs? It would certainly focus the minds of PM Brown and OL Cameron to give us a referendum on EU. In my mind the only 2 people in the UK who can deliver a referendum.
The destruction of the world's oceans.
But one question on my mind especially, is to ask all those seeking to get rid of PM Brown, including Opposition Leader Cameron, ‘would changing the Captain of the Titanic, hours before the disaster, have averted it?' Certainly as history tells it, he and others died with honour and dignity. But when you really feel a change would have saved all those lives, get on with it. The Country is bigger than any Party or individual.
If on the other hand you think that changing the captain would really have done nothing at all to avert the collision with the iceberg, accept the fact and get on with changing what will make a difference. The terrible mess you have got our Parliament into by greed and inconsideration!- »Permalink

Another French Snub?
Has the French owned Sita snubbed, Calderdale Kerbside in the same way as the French President has snubbed the Queen over the D-Day celebrations?
I recently took the opportunity of responding to an email from the Sita UK General Manager asking some questions. Of course I was passed on to underlings and had to wait a while to get the answers but, I put these questions because there is still real concern about the new waste system which Sita now runs.
In general terms I think the popular concerns across Calderdale boil down into 3 separate areas.
1. Why was Kerbside Calderdale dumped... in many views right from the outset? It also seems to many that it was knowingly by the Council with Sita complicit in this. Their (Sita's) response to this part of my question just amounts to a denial rather than an explanation. The length of time taken to get back to me confirms in my mind that perhaps there was indeed some sort of collusion and a few people had to be contacted to check out the reply before it was sent to me.
2. Why are the new rules so draconian and inflexible? It seems to many of the public that they must themselves do a lot of the work.... pulling bins to roadsides, sorting recyclables, keeping track of what is collected on what day, cleaning up the litter which is just caste away onto the road if any residents have dared to put something in the wrong container/bag, whilst at the same time getting 50% less bin collections and no reduction in council tax, oh yes.... and more blocked roads with downright rude collectors. Any wonder the 'help lines' are blocked?
Lets not forget, local taxpayers are PAYING FOR THIS SERVICE and we don't all have an ‘R-Level'... (Qualification in Recycling).
3. The wider green and recycling issue. There is support for this and most people I talk to want to help and do more recycling... the will is there but people are feeling 'put on'.
I have added the questions and Sita's replies as a comment on this entry. Anybody with a view out there, please let me know.

New Tories; Can We Trust Them?
David Cameron is, it seems to me, using the ‘expenses scandal' to re-invigorate his Westminster Tories. Firing the ‘old guard', irrespective if the left, right or centre. Anybody who might be considered liabilities, (made poor judgments). Is he so certain of a victory at the next election or is he hoping by this tactic to get one?
Inviting a new breed of people (Joannas) to join up and try to become New Tory MPs. People who are high profile, popular campaigners and dedicated well-known characters. They could be rewarded with the Tory candidature of a few remaining seats which would, under any other circumstances be a Tory no-hoper, (Wigan springs to mind, local elections May 08), and in the process, add their popularity to the Good Old Establishment Blue Team.
Opportunistic it is; is it convincing? I'm certainly sure that DC will do anything to get into #10.
Over to you now Gordon, what will you come up with in response or, too busy ‘getting on with the job' of saving the world from economic disaster?
But what of poor Julie, that innocent bride; Now that her hubbies no job on the ride.
