Lib Dem Plans to tackle crime
We are fully on board with our Local Bath MP Don Foster who has welcomed the new Liberal Democrat plans to tackle youth crime, and has backed local groups who are already making a difference.
Here in Twerton we have had many problems over the years with youth disturbances and we need all the help that we can get to help resolve the issues of youth crime.
Don said, “We need to give young people positive alternatives to do. Too often they get into trouble because there is nothing for them to do. The Youth Volunteer Force will be a great way to get young people involved in activities that benefit themselves and the area where they live.
“I am also keen to ensure that those who do break the law or cause disturbances or vandalism have to pay back the community they have wronged.
“That is why restorative justice is important. It will mean that those convicted of offences will have to work on cleaning up vandalism or on projects that benefit communities as part of their punishment. It also helps young people better understand how they have affected their community,
“Here in Bath we are lucky to have seen work start on restorative justice, both through the police and through the Children’s Society. Their work is very important and is beginning to yield positive results. The communities they are working with are really seeing the benefit. But we need to be able to spread these principles to more areas.”
The plans aim to deter crime and get young people involved in positive activities that benefit local communities. They include:
- The creation of a Youth Volunteer Force, to engage with young people, involve them in community projects and give them skills to benefit them in later life;
- Establish Community Justice Panels across the country, where offenders admit their guilt to the community and agree on a Positive Behaviour Order as a course of action;
- Create a dedicated PCSO youth officer within every Safer Neighbourhood Team to identify and work with teenagers most at risk of offending;
- 10,000 more police on the streets by scrapping the ID cards scheme;
- Intelligence-led stop and search and 'hot spot policing' targeted at gun and knife crime;
- Restorative justice programs to be run in every community, specifically targeted at early intervention with widespread use in schools and care homes.

Complaints have been made to the Council and Somer Housing about the condition of the footpath by the side of 12 Redland Park and we have asked that the weeds that are growing out of the the School grounds are removed. Work on the Children's lay are is under way and we have asked that full repairs to the fence are made to keep dogs out of this area.
Highland & Landsser Road
We continue to have a problem with litter on these roads and much of this is caused by one or two people who insist on putting their black bags out early before collection day and we have there for asked that council officer try to find out who the offenders are. We have also asked in the mean time that the area is kept as clean as possible.
Pennyquick View & Day Crescent
The Majority of Houses are now empty in Pennyquick View ready for redevelopment and several have been vacated in Day Crescent although we must say that we are still waiting for a formal planning application from Somer Housing for the redevelopment of this area although as to date we have heard that they are making alterations to their proposals we will let you know what they are up to as soon as we find out.
Newton Road
After a period of waiting we have had two new litter bins installed near to the Cost Cutter Shop on Newton Road we have also recently had several black sacks of litter removed.
High Street
New drain covers have been installed by the shops close to the Spar shop, these are the second ones to be put in this year. The Former Marjorie Whimster home will soon be demolished and new housing for the site has been proposed. The issue of the footpath 25-19 is one that we have asked to be resurfaced and we have also asked for drooped kerbs to be installed at this location.
We are dealing with several complaints of Anti Social behaviour from Several Families, these have been reported to the Police and Somer Housing who we have asked to deal with these issues. We have also picked up complaints about cars being vandalised and these have also been reported to the Police.
Dominion Road
We have had the footpath between this road and Freeview Road Cleared of the overhanging trees and have all the rubbish and glass removed, this path has proved difficult in the past and we have asked the council to keep this lane monitored.
Each Sunday the WCRP is holding a car boot sale in Rosewarn field. All welcome
Credit Union
In these more difficult times, finance is becoming more of a problem with some residents taking up loan offers from companies lending money at 180% interest rates. Credit Unions offer much safer and more affordable ways of borrowing money and instil a sense of responsibility about saving as well as borrowing. However the Credit Union currently has a small pot of money available to lend to new members who do not currently have a savings record with them.
For more information email banes.creditunion@hotmail.co.uk or call 01179865888.
Please note the Credit Union is not part of the Council.

‘Proud of Pubs’ Week
It was god to attend one of our Local pubs with Bath MP Don Foster we visited The White Horse to join in The Publican’s ‘Proud of Pubs’ week. The pub has recently raised over £2.000 for charity through various events, including holding a bungee jump in the back garden.
As local councillors we are really pleased with the activities at the White Horse and thank Jackie and Steve and their staff for the warm welcome that we are always given.
Don said, “The White Horse is an excellent example of what a community pub can be. They are responsible members of the community and have raised so much money for good causes.
“It’s a shame that the Government continues to disadvantage community pubs, such as by putting 4p a pint extra on a pint of beer, when really they should be doing all they can to help them flourish. As The Publican states, over half of pubs have seen sales fall in the last year.
“It was great to meet Steve, Jackie and the staff at the pub, and I hope that the local community supports their work. I also know there are many other great local pubs in Bath and we should be doing all we can to support them.”
