24th March - Mayor of Poole Talks to Le Havre Rotary
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, welcomed members of Parkstone and Le Havre Rotary Clubs - in French as well as English!
The Parkstone Rotary Club, which is twinned with the Rotary Club of Le Havre Estuaire, was hosting a visit by members of the French club to Poole, the highlight of which was a talk about the town and Council of Poole and it's Mayoral regalia.
Hosted by Parkstone President Roger Simmons, the members of both clubs gathered in the Civic Centre Committee Suite while the Mayor showed a Powerpoint presentation to accompany her talk about the town and welcome to the foreign guests. The Mayor then had to leave for another engagement, leaving her macebearer Mike Weetman to continue talking about the Mayoral insignia and to show the Rotarians the Council Chamber, but very much in good old fashioned English!.
Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, Mayor of Poole, said "I thought it would be nice for our French visitors to hear my presentation in both our languages as we do tend to take it for granted that everyone speaks English. My French is O-level standard but just about passable regarding pronunciation. I owe a huge thank you to Nick Ellis of Transportation fame, who very kindly assisted me with my speech, Nick speaks about 4 languages and is an absolute whiz at witty French addresses."
